Fearful or anxious dogs

Behaviour Coaching for Anxious, Fearful & Phobic Dogs

One-to-one behaviour support to help your dog feel calmer and safer in everyday life — whether they’re worried by walks, nervous about travel, startled by sounds, or scared of the vet. Together, we’ll create a clear plan so you can stop second-guessing, reduce your dog’s stress, and bring more peace back into your life.

Understanding the Struggle

When your dog is scared, life gets harder for both of you.

You love your dog to bits, but their fears are making everyday life a whole lot tougher than it needs to be. Maybe walks have turned into battles of nerves, or every vet visit feels like a trauma. Perhaps car journeys leave them trembling, or sudden noises send them bolting for cover. And when they’re always on edge, you can’t fully relax either.

You’ve probably already tried one, more, or all of these:

  • Avoiding the things that scare them, even if it turns your life upside down.
  • Stocking up on calming products, supplements, or special gear.
  • Hoping they’d “get used to it” if you just kept going.
  • Following tips from books, blogs, or well-meaning friends.
  • Joining training classes, only to find the whole thing was far too much for your dog.

But despite all the effort, you’re still stuck. Avoiding triggers forever isn’t realistic, and quick fixes don’t get to the root of the problem — the fear itself. What your dog needs is to feel genuinely safe, and what you need is a clear, expert plan to help them get there.

Because really, you just want to enjoy life with your dog again:

  • Heading out the door without a meltdown or a standoff.
  • Coping with travel, vet visits, or everyday noises without dread.
  • Finally seeing your dog settle, rest, and feel at ease in their own skin.

A Path to Calm

A structured plan, expert guidance, and support every step of the way

With expert guidance, you’ll:

  • Understand your dog’s fears – so you can respond in ways that truly help them feel safe, rather than just managing or masking the symptoms.
  • Follow a personalised, flexible plan – no rigid, one-size-fits-all advice. We’ll focus on what matters most for your dog right now and adapt as they grow in confidence.
  • Build their resilience step by step – using gentle, positive methods that help them feel braver without ever pushing them too far, too fast.
  • Know how to handle tricky situations – from vet visits and car travel to sudden noises or everyday stressors, you’ll feel confident and prepared.
  • Get support when you need it – with regular check-ins, video reviews, and ongoing guidance so you’re never left guessing what to do next.

This isn’t just a training plan — it’s a fully supported coaching programme designed to help your anxious or fearful dog feel calmer and safer, while giving you the clarity, confidence, and relief you’ve been searching for.

Hi, I'm Kelly

Headshot with Flint scaled e1740061728469

I’m a Clinical Animal Behaviourist and the founder of Tails We Win, with over 14 years of experience helping anxious, fearful, phobic, and reactive dogs feel safer and more secure in the world. My work is rooted in the latest behavioural science, ethical training methods, and a deep understanding of how emotions drive behaviour.

But it’s not just about credentials. I know what it’s like to love a dog who spends so much of their life feeling worried. It’s heartbreaking, and it can leave you feeling stuck, second-guessing yourself, and wondering if things will ever get better. You’re not alone in that.

My slightly unusual background in engineering and software development means I bring something different to behaviour coaching too. I use agile frameworks to help turn complex challenges into structured, step-by-step progress. Supporting an anxious dog isn’t about rigid rules or pushing them through — it’s about working with where they are today, adapting as they grow, and having a clear way to track success without overwhelm.

That’s exactly how I build my coaching. You’ll get a flexible plan that evolves with your dog, clear guidance on what to do day-to-day, and someone in your corner to help you through the tough moments.

I created this service because I know how hard it is to watch your dog struggle with fear. You don’t need more products, conflicting advice, or false promises. What you need is expert support, a clear plan, and the confidence to help your dog feel genuinely safe. And that’s what we’ll work on together.

Archie, a young dog, sitting calmly on a countryside walk after behaviour support helped him feel more confident and relaxed.

“At the start of the package, we had a dog I was frightened to take outside.

Even a simple loo trip in the garden was stressful. We were seriously beginning to plan how to tell the breeder he had to go back.

Now, we can barely believe the transformation. Not just in Archie’s behaviour, but in our relationship with him.

Don’t get me wrong, he isn’t an angel. He’s still an exuberant adolescent, but my husband and I love him to bits and are so proud of how he’s doing.

We’re finally recognising the joy and balance he brings to our lives, and we’re so grateful to have him around.”

How it works

You’re ready to get started—so what happens next?

Step 1: Choose your package

Decide whether you’d like to begin with a 12 or 16-week coaching package (for focused progress with a clear structure) or join on a monthly plan (ongoing support that flexes with you and your dog). You’ll see the full details and cost before you commit, so there are no surprises.

Step 2: Getting set up

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll get access to my booking calendar to arrange your initial consultation. This first session is always online so we can cover everything in detail and make sure you feel comfortable before training begins.

Step 3: Get your personalised plan

After your consultation, you’ll receive a step-by-step plan designed for you and your dog. We’ll break the work down into clear, manageable exercises that fit into your daily life, with definitions of “done” so you’ll always know you’re on track.

Step 4: Ongoing coaching & support

We’ll meet regularly for your 1:1 coaching sessions — either online or, if you’re local and happy to travel, in-person at a private training field. Between sessions, you’ll also have support via WhatsApp and video reviews. This means you can ask questions, share wins, and get feedback whenever you need it — not just when we’re live together.

Step 5: Adjust, progress, and repeat

Each block of work builds on the last, and we’ll adapt as your dog’s confidence grows. You’ll always know what’s next, and you’ll never be left wondering what to do. Whether you complete the 12-week package or continue monthly, you’ll leave each stage with more tools, more confidence, and more progress to build on.

Every dog is different, and lasting change takes time — but with the right plan and ongoing support, progress is always possible.

Choose the level of support that's right for you

Every dog is different, and so is every owner’s journey. That’s why I offer three starting packages — each designed to give you the expert support you need, with the option to continue afterwards on a monthly plan if you’d like ongoing coaching.

Looking for ongoing support?

Monthly packages are available once you’ve completed an initial package. These give you continued access to regular coaching sessions, between-session support, and the reassurance of having an expert in your corner for the long haul.

You don't have to figure this out alone.

You’re here because you’re ready for change. You want to stop second-guessing yourself and start feeling confident about how to help your anxious dog. With expert guidance, a structured plan, and ongoing support, that’s exactly what we’ll build together.

Let's get started!

Find the perfect fit

Is this service right for you?

Choosing the right coaching package is crucial for addressing your dog’s unique behaviour challenges. This service is designed for dogs who are anxious, fearful, or phobic — whether that shows up on walks, during car travel, at the vet, around everyday noises, or simply in how your dog copes with daily life.

If you’re ready to help your dog feel calmer and more confident, here’s how to know if this programme is designed for you.

This IS for you if:

  • Your dog struggles with fear or anxiety — whether that means freezing on walks, bolting at sudden noises, trembling in the car, or panicking at the vet.
  • You want to understand your dog’s emotions and help them feel genuinely safe, not just mask the symptoms.
  • You’re committed to kind, ethical, science-based training that prioritise your dog’s wellbeing.
  • You’re ready to work in small, manageable steps to build real, lasting change.
  • You value having a flexible but structured plan that adapts as your dog’s confidence grows.
  • You value expert guidance and ongoing support, rather than trying to piece things together on your own.

This IS NOT for you if:

  • You’re looking for a quick fix or expecting your dog’s fears to vanish overnight.
  • You’re hoping to use corrections, aversive tools (e.g., prong collars, e-collars), or punishment-based methods. My approach focuses on helping dogs feel safe, not forcing them to comply.
  • You want your dog to “just stop” being scared, without addressing the underlying emotions.
  • You’re unable to commit some time and consistency to support your dog between sessions.
  • You need training to take place inside your home — this is an online-first coaching service, with the option of in-person sessions at a private outdoor facility if you’re local and willing to travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Training & Methods

Will positive reinforcement really work for my anxious dog?

Yes! Positive reinforcement is highly effective for anxious, fearful, and phobic dogs. More importantly, it’s an ethical and humane way of helping them. With consistency, we’ll create positive associations in situations your dog currently finds overwhelming. And because we’re working with how your dog feels (not just what they do), this approach also strengthens your bond and helps your dog feel safer with you by their side.

What if my dog is too stressed to take treats?

That’s completely normal for anxious dogs. If your dog is too worried to eat, we’ll adjust the training so we’re working at a distance or in a way where they feel safe. We’ll also explore other reinforcers such as toys, praise, or simply giving them space.

My dog has been fearful for years — can they still improve?

Absolutely! Dogs of any age can learn new coping skills with the right approach. The key is working at their pace and focusing on helping them feel safer, not forcing them through situations.

How long will it take to see results?

Every dog is different, but many clients notice small shifts — like quicker recovery after a noise, or being less tense on walks — within a few weeks. Long-term behaviour change takes time, and our structured approach ensures progress happens at a pace your dog can handle.

Will my dog always need to avoid scary things?

At first, yes — we’ll use careful management so your dog isn’t constantly pushed beyond their limits. Over time, as they feel safer, their confidence will grow and their world can gently expand. The goal isn’t avoidance forever — it’s building coping skills so life feels easier for you both.

What if my dog doesn’t improve?

Because we adapt the plan as we go, you’re never left stuck. If something isn’t working, we’ll pivot and find what does. And if we suspect an underlying medical issue or your dog would benefit from medication alongside behaviour support, I’ll liaise with your vet so your dog gets the right help.

Can you guarantee results?

No ethical behaviourist can guarantee specific results. What I can guarantee is a compassionate, science-based approach, ongoing support, and a plan tailored to you and your dog.

Practicalities of Working Together

What happens after I book?

Once you book your package, you’ll receive a welcome email with a link to schedule your first session. I’ll also ask you to complete a questionnaire about your dog so we can hit the ground running.

What if I need to reschedule a session?

I design programmes for best results when sessions are spaced every 2–3 weeks, but I also understand life happens. Where possible, I’ll offer flexibility. All sessions must be taken within the agreed programme duration.

How will I know we’re making progress?

You’ll have a clear plan with milestones from day one. Regular check-ins ensure we stay on track, and we’ll adjust as needed. You’ll see progress both in your dog’s behaviour and in your confidence handling situations.

What if life gets in the way and I can’t train as much as I planned?

That’s completely normal. We’ll prioritise the most important skills and fit training into your routine, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

What if I pick the wrong package?

If you’re unsure which level of support to choose, get in touch, and I’ll help you decide. You can also start with the Groundwork package and then continue into a larger package or monthly plan.

Can I extend my support if I feel I need more help?

Yes! Many clients continue after their initial package with ongoing monthly support, so you’re never left on your own if you’d like to keep going.

What equipment will I need for training?

Nothing fancy — just your usual walking gear, plenty of treats, and a way to record short videos (your phone is perfect). If specific tools would help your dog, I’ll recommend them.

What if I don’t feel confident training my dog?

That’s exactly why I’m here! You don’t need to be an expert — I’ll coach you step by step so you always know what to do next.

Format & Delivery

I’ve only ever worked with trainers in person—will online coaching really work?

Absolutely! Online coaching means your dog learns in their own safe environment without the stress of strangers or travel. You’ll also get more tailored support, real-time feedback, and the flexibility of fitting sessions into your life.

If you’re local and willing to travel, in-person sessions can also be arranged at my private outdoor facility in Fernhurst, West Sussex.

Do I need to be tech-savvy to do online coaching?

Not at all! If you can join a video call, record a video on your phone, and send a message, you’ll have everything you need. I’ll guide you through the rest.

Vet, Medical & Insurance

What about medication?

Sometimes vets recommend behaviour medication to support dogs with high levels of fear or anxiety. This isn’t a “last resort”, medication can make it easier for your dog to learn, cope, and feel safe. In the UK, only your vet can prescribe medication, which is why a veterinary referral is essential. It allows me to work in partnership with your vet to make sure your dog gets the right balance of medical and behavioural support.

Why do I need a veterinary referral before starting?

Because health and behaviour are deeply connected. Pain or illness can contribute to fear and anxiety. A referral from your vet ensures we rule out medical causes and gives us the chance to work together for the best outcome for your dog

Can I claim this service on my pet insurance?

Many UK insurance providers cover behaviour consultations with qualified professionals. Check with your provider to see if you’re eligible — I’m happy to help with the paperwork if needed.

Why should I work with a Clinical Animal Behaviourist?

As a qualified Clinical Animal Behaviourist, I use ethical, evidence-based methods to address behaviour at its emotional root. That means we’re not just changing what your dog does in the moment — we’re helping them feel safer and more secure in the long run.

Investment

I’m worried about the cost — what if it’s not worth the investment?

This is an investment in your dog’s wellbeing and your peace of mind. Many clients find they save money in the long run by addressing the root causes of fear rather than endlessly trying short-term fixes.
